Though born in England, his father and the rest of his siblings were all born in Scotland, and he likes to think of himself as a Scotsman. A German V-2 rocket blew up a nearby police station moments before his birth. Attended high school with Ray and Dave Davies and Pete Quaife, the founding members of the Kinks. Spent three weeks as an apprentice with the Brentford Football Club before deciding on a music career. Was the original lead singer for the Jeff Beck Group, but quit the group the night before they were to play at Woodstock. Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a solo artist in 1994; inducted a second time (as a member of The Faces) in 2012. Underwent surgery for thyroid cancer in July 2000. Received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on October 11, 2005. Is a model-railway enthusiast, and owns a scale model of New York City's Grand Central Station as it was in the 1940s. Made a Knight in Queen Elizabeth II's Birthday Honours list in 2016.
