Trivia: The son of actress Nan Kelly Yorke, Jack Kelly was the younger brother of stage and film star Nancy Kelly. Like Nancy, Jack was a professional from an early age, acting in radio and on stage before the age of 10, and in films from 1937 (he is quite prominent in a brace of 1939 20th Century-Fox films, Young Mr. Lincoln and The Story of Alexander Graham Bell). He reemerged as a leading man in the early 1950s, appearing in such films as Forbidden Planet (1956, as the ill-fated Lieutenant Farnam). Signed by Warner Bros. in 1955, Kelly starred as Dr. Paris Mitchell in the weekly TV version of the 1942 film King's Row. He went on to play gamblin' man Bart Maverick on the longer-running Warners western series Maverick. Though his popularity never matched that of his co-star James Garner, Kelly still developed a fan following as Bart; he remained with the series from 1957 until its cancellation in 1962, appearing opposite such Garner successors as Roger Moore and Robert Colbert. Kelly dabbled in a little bit of everything after that: hosting the anthology series NBC Comedy Playhouse (1973), emceeing the game show Sale of the Century (1969-71), and playing hard-nosed Lt. Ryan on the Teresa Graves series Get Christie Love (1974) and Harry Hammond on The Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew Mysteries (1977-79). He revived the Bart Maverick character on 1978's The New Maverick and the 1990 TV movie The Gambler Returns: Luck of the Draw. Chances are that, had he lived, Jack Kelly would have been invited to co-star again with Garner in the 1994 Mel Gibson theatrical-feature version of Maverick.

Trivia: Teenaged actress Nancy Gates had already accrued a respectable string of stage and radio credits when she was signed by RKO Radio studios in 1942. She served a short apprenticeship in 2-reelers and "B"-pictures (and also showed up very briefly in Orson Welles' The Magnificent Ambersons) before being promoted to such RKO "A"s as This Land is Mine (1943) and The Spanish Main (1945). Though a pleasant and attractive screen personality, Gates never exuded true star quality, and by the 1950s she was free-lancing in low-budget films like The Atomic City and in television. Retiring from films in 1960 to spend more time with her family, Nancy Gates began making occasional TV appearances again in such series as The Twilight Zone and Mod Squad.

Trivia: American actress Diane McBain was first presented to the paying public as a Warner Bros. contract starlet. Evidently built up as Warner's answer to Carroll Baker, the young blonde actress appeared in such films as Ice Palace (1960), Parrish (1961) and Claudelle Inglish (1963) (in the title role), and also spent two years in the role of "girl Friday" Daphne Dutton on the Warners TV private-eye series Surfside Six (1960-62). McBain also did box-office duty with Elvis Presley in Spinout (1966). Her career petered out towards the late '60s, with such negligible roles as the head of a biker gang in The Miniskirt Mob (1968), but Diane McBain managed to survive into the '80s, when she played the recurring role of Claire Howard on General Hospital.

Trivia: A one-time Miss California, American actress Sheila Bromley came to films relatively late; she was 26 when she appeared in her first movie, Idol of the Crowds (1937). While she had several short-term starlet contracts over the years, principally at Columbia, Fox and Warner Bros., Bromley's credits are hard to trace, simply because she spent so much time not being Sheila Bromley. At various points in her career she billed herself as Sheila Manners, Sheila Mannors and Sheila Fulton, seldom rising above B-picture status under any of those names. On TV, she was a regular on the popular sitcom I Married Joan (1952-55), billed again as Sheila Bromley. After nearly twenty years in such disposable second features as Torture Ship (1939), Calling Philo Vance (1940), Time to Kill (1942) and Young Jesse James (1950), "Sheila Bromley/Manners/Mannors/Fulton" retired, returning several years later for small roles in major 1960s productions like Judgment at Nuremberg (1961) and Hotel (1966). In 1965, Sheila Bromley had a continuing featured role on the NBC TV daytime drama Morning Star.

Trivia: British actor Alan Caillou played character roles from the '60s through the mid-'80s. He has been in the U.S. for many years. In addition to acting, Caillou has also penned over 40 novels and numerous screenplays.

Trivia: A staple of Western-themed films and television series, veteran character actor Rayford Barnes began his onscreen career with John Wayne in Hondo, and in recent years appeared on television in Walker, Texas Ranger and ER. After beginning his career in New York training with Stella Adler and the Neighborhood Playhouse, Barnes moved to San Francisco to open his own theater, and later relocated to San Francisco, where he landed his role in Hondo. A veteran of WWII, Barnes made regular appearances on such TV series as Gunsmoke, The Virginian, and Little House on the Prairie while concurrently appearing in Westerns like The Wild Bunch and The Hunting Party. Rayford Barnes died on November 11, 2000, at St. Andrews Medical Center in Santa Monica, CA. He was 80.
